CONGRATULATIONS:

Congratulations on the purchase of your new kiln.

We suggest you retain a link to this page as a future resource as it contains important information you must read prior to receiving your kiln, also helpful information you may want to refer to in the future.

If you haven’t already, it’s important to read the Fired Up Kilns Terms & Conditions as they contain important information.

All of this information, and much more, is available on the Resources & FAQ pages of the Fired Up Kilns webpage.

PAYMENT:

Once your invoice has been issued, prompt payment is required to ensure no delays in dispatching your kiln.

We cannot store kilns, so unreasonable delays may incur a storage charge.

Our Commonwealth bank details for direct deposit are:

Acount: 1401 5021

Please email us a confirmation quoting your invoice number.

You can also follow the links from the invoice to pay online.

If you want to pay by credit card over the phone (a 1% surcharge applies), give us a call.

RECEIVING YOUR KILN:

Liability for kiln damage rests with you once you accept the kiln.

Therefore, regardless of how you are receiving your kiln (collecting from us, your nearest depot or delivered to you), it is essential you follow these rules:

  • Always check thoroughly for any signs of damage BEFORE accepting.
  • Always inform the courier immediately that you suspect or see damage.
  • Always refuse to accept a shipment if you see damage that is severe or catastrophic.
  • Always take pictures or a video of any concerns or damage to the kiln and its exterior packaging.
  • Always keep the damaged packaging / crating.
  • Always inform us and the courier company within 3 days of any damage, they will not accept any liability after this time due to their insurance rules.

Kilns are heavy bulky items, and can be top heavy. Damage often occurs after the kiln has arrived and is being moved to its final location.

Please ensure you have assessed your moving needs prior to the kiln arriving (enough people, smooth surface, lifting equipment, etc.).

Prior to receiving, unpacking, and operating your new kiln it’s essential that you read your kiln and controller manuals (which you can find below).

INSPECTION HOLES:

Our kilns are fitted with various inspection and venting holes.

During firing a significant amount of heat and hot gases escape through these holes. NEVER put your eyes or fingers close to them when the kiln is operating.

Our smaller kilns have a square brick which you will find in your accessories pack, this is the damper for the roof vent allowing you to control how open or closed the lid vent is.

Our larger kilns are fitted with large vent flaps on each side, these and their fasteners are provided in your accessories pack. There are two pre-tapped holes on the top of the kiln to mount the vent flaps to the kiln.

  • The door has a spy hole with its own bung provided.

SAFETY SWITCHES:

All kilns are fitted with a safety switch which disconnects the elements from the electrical supply when the door is opened.

Please note that this switch is not intended to be an isolation switch.

After use the kiln should be switched off and isolated from the electrical supply either at the wall socket or at an independent isolation switch.

NEVER open the kiln door during the heating cycle as this can lead to damage to the kiln as well as serious injury to the operator.

A ceramic fibre seal may be fitted to your kilns doors / lid, to help ensure a good seal when closed. Over time these seal will degrade, contact us for replacements in required.

SAFE KILN USE:

A few simple reminders on safe kiln use:

  • Always monitor a firing kiln - the last resort in preventing over-firing damage!
  • Use Cones - the only way to really know the kilns heat-work.
  • Ensure effective ventilation when firing - the only way to slow corrosion.
  • Don't open your kiln when the internal temperature exceeds 200c.
  • Vacuum the element channels regularly.
  • Treat the elements with extreme care as they become brittle and can easily break.
  • Never subject your kiln to water, moisture, or condensation.
  • Only fire your kiln in a safe & secure location.
  • Turn your kiln off / Isolate from power when not in use.
  • Children should be kept well away from kilns!
  • Never pull, move or lift your kiln by the door / lid, significant damage can occur to the kilns bricks.

If you are new to owning or operating a kiln, or want to brush up your knowledge, we encourage you to review this link on basic info on Kilns.

INDUSTRY KILNS ONLY:

  1. The Thermocouple(s) must be inserted into the kiln prior to use and secured on the mounting bracket with the grub screws provided.
  2. Before using the kiln with ware inside you need to oxidise the elements. This is done by an empty kiln firing of program 16.
  3. Your kiln is heavy. Use caution and have adequate assistance when removing your kiln from its pallet and positioning it, this may require a forklift or crane truck.
  4. Kiln doors have a temporary steel traveling bracket, once removed, keep it in a convenient place for use should the kiln need to be moved at any stage in the future.
  5. Kilns up to the Industry 425 may be supplied with wheels. These are provided with a single 10mm bolt and nut which must be secured when the kiln is supported by either a jack or forklift.

THANK YOU:

Enjoy your kiln, fire safely, and please send us some images of your work as we love to see the results of your talent and our kilns (#firedupkilns).

We take great pride in our products and trust that your Fired Up Kiln will provide you with many years of reliable operation.
